MASLENITSA

Whilst in the UK we celebrate pancakes for just one day, the Russians do things differently. They celebrate pancakes for a whole week!

Blinis are traditional Russian pancakes and are said to symbolise the sun, marking the coming of spring. At Maslenitsa, they are given to friends and family and topped variously with caviar, mushrooms, jam, sour cream and lots of butter. As well as the pancakes themselves, a carnival atmosphere descends on the city with street entertainment and fireworks just a few of the spectacles visitors can expect.
